Measles Death Confirmed as Dispute Grows

The Lancaster County coroner confirmed Friday that a 6-week-old girl died from measles, the first local finding that the disease caused one of the two deaths the state reported last week.

Coroner Stephen Diamantoni said the Amish infant was born with a rare genetic condition that made her vulnerable to the virus. He has said the other death, a newborn boy, was caused by a lacerated spleen, with measles listed only as a contributing condition.

The CDC still hasn’t counted either death. HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said Friday the coroner’s findings show why the agency “waited for the evidence” before reporting; Gov. Josh Shapiro accused him of sowing doubt and fueling conspiracy theories that invaded the families’ privacy.

Pennsylvania has recorded 577 cases this year, and the two deaths are the state’s first tied to measles in 35 years.

Acid Spill Closes I-83 Twice

A tractor-trailer hauling phosphoric acid crashed and caught fire on Interstate 83 in York County Friday night, and the highway was still causing headaches Saturday.

State police were called around 7:15 p.m. to the southbound lanes near mile marker 32 in Newberry Township. No other vehicles were involved and crews quickly put out the fire, but leaking acid forced a shutdown in both directions between exits 28 and 32.

One lane reopened Saturday morning after the initial cleanup, but hazmat crews were called back and PennDOT closed all southbound lanes a second time.

No injuries were reported. Check 511PA before heading that way this morning.

Youth League Punishes Brawling Coaches

The Steel City Youth Football League has handed down lifetime bans and season-long suspensions after coaches brawled on the field during a late-August game in Pittsburgh.

Three people are banned from coaching for life, three more are out for the rest of the 2026 season, and two others received warnings. The league didn’t name anyone, saying it wanted to “protect privacy and respect the process.”

Both programs involved, Carlynton and Keystone Oaks, are on probation for the rest of the season.

Criminal charges came earlier in the week: Carlynton coach DeQuay Canton faces a misdemeanor, and Keystone Oaks coaches Joseph Kubiak and Frank McGrath face summary charges.
