Marijuana Legalization Hinges on Senate Races

Pennsylvania Democrats say they’ll legalize recreational marijuana if they flip three state Senate seats in November, giving them control of the chamber for the first time in nearly 50 years.

House Speaker Joanna McClinton told a Black Cannabis Week event in Philadelphia last week that lawmakers “have to change who is making the laws in that chamber.”

The House passed a legalization bill 102-101 in May 2025, but it died in committee in the Senate, where Republicans hold 27 of 50 seats.

Democrats say a new bill would expunge past convictions and could prioritize black communities for business licenses, while Republicans who opposed last year’s bill cited health concerns and objections to state-run dispensaries.

Town Residents Offered $10K Each for Data Center

NorthPoint Development has offered $10,000 to every household in Luzerne County’s Hazle Township if its proposed data center is approved, but many residents are still pushing back.

The money depends on approval of the first of up to 15 buildings planned for a 1,300-acre site at the foot of the Poconos, where the median household income is about $60,000.

Residents interviewed cited fears of noise and falling property values, along with distrust of both the developer and local officials.

Township leaders rejected the project on zoning grounds last year, and NorthPoint has sued to overturn the decision.

Capitol Honors 50 Years of THON

The Pennsylvania Capitol honored THON’s 50-year partnership with Four Diamonds, the fund that helps families pay for childhood cancer care at Penn State Health Golisano Children’s Hospital in Hershey.

Since 1977, the Penn State dance marathon has raised more than $273 million for Four Diamonds, growing into the world’s largest student-run philanthropy.

Last week, an anonymous donor funded permanent signage honoring both groups at Beaver Stadium’s Gate B, giving up naming rights to do it.

THON 2026 raised a record $18.8 million, and the 50th-anniversary marathon is set for next February.
