Question: Isaly’s, the dairy behind Pittsburgh’s beloved chipped ham, also invented what famous ice cream treat?
Answer: The Klondike bar. The earliest known mention appears in a 1922 Youngstown newspaper, and early flavors included cherry, maple, and grape. Isaly’s started in Mansfield, Ohio, and came to Pittsburgh in the 1930s, where Klondikes were always square because Henry Isaly said he’d “never put it on a stick.”
