Question: Pennsylvania’s wild elk herd traces back to 50 animals shipped in by train in 1913. Where did they come from?

Answer: Yellowstone National Park. The Game Commission’s first shipment of Yellowstone elk cost about $30 apiece and came from a federal effort to thin the park’s booming herd. Two years later, the state bought 95 more, and today’s herd descends from those western transplants.
