Freight Train Derails in Altoona

At least 11 cars of a Norfolk Southern freight train derailed in Altoona on Friday afternoon, disrupting Amtrak service between Pittsburgh and Harrisburg.

The eastbound train was headed from Pittsburgh toward Allentown and Jersey City, and three of the derailed cars were tankers carrying propane, though officials reported no leaks, spills, or injuries.

Amtrak canceled the westbound Pennsylvanian between Harrisburg and Pittsburgh on Friday and started Saturday’s eastbound train in Harrisburg while it worked to arrange buses for passengers.

It follows three other Norfolk Southern derailments at or near Altoona’s historic Horseshoe Curve this year, in February, March, and August.

Cornell Loses Coach Ed Dawson

Ed Dawson, the head football coach at Cornell High School in Coraopolis, died Friday after a medical emergency during his team’s game at Rochester.

Coraopolis Mayor Michael Dixon said that when Cornell stepped away from football, a lot of people assumed Friday nights there were over. “Coach Dawson didn’t accept that.”

Once the program returned, he led Cornell to its first section title in 36 years and a WPIAL semifinal run in 2019, a season that earned him a Super Bowl surprise from Steelers player Joe Haden.

Fort Cherry High School’s football team paid tribute, saying Dawson “exemplified every quality needed in a high school head coach and spent countless years preparing young men for life.”

Video Rental Returns to Philly

Dylan and Keri Wise are bringing the video store back to Philadelphia with Little Movie Store, a South Philly shop opening this month with about 20,000 titles.

Members pay $160 a year to check out up to three movies at a time, and roughly half the store is stocked with movies for sale.

Philadelphia’s last Blockbuster, on Frankford Avenue, closed in 2013, and Dylan Wise credits a trip to the last remaining Blockbuster, in Bend, Oregon, with setting him on the path to opening his own.

It’s part of a wider revival, with new rental shops popping up from Minneapolis to Philadelphia as streaming prices rise and digital licenses lapse.

The Flyover

You may never notice the prison. Someone inside is asking for a Bible.

Pennsylvania has a large prison system, with many facilities in rural areas far from the places most readers spend their days. The people inside can feel distant, too.

But their request is simple: a Bible of their own.

Through Prison Fellowship, you can help incarcerated men and women gain access to God’s Word. For someone seeking forgiveness, guidance, or a reason to believe life can change, that access can be a meaningful first step.

Your gift helps provide something tangible: a Bible someone can hold, open, and read for themselves.

Even when a person’s circumstances are far from your own, helping meet their need can be straightforward.

Help send a Bible today.
