Burlington Stores Moving HQ to Philadelphia

Burlington Stores is moving its corporate headquarters from South Jersey to Philadelphia’s Schuylkill Yards, a $370 million investment expected to create at least 2,000 jobs over five years.

Gov. Josh Shapiro and Mayor Cherelle Parker joined company leaders in University City on Thursday to announce the move. The state is contributing $30 million in grants, while the city added a $7 million forgivable loan and tax credits.

“As the size and complexity of our business has increased, we’ve outgrown our old corporate headquarters,” CEO Michael O’Sullivan said. The Fortune 500 retailer, founded in Burlington County in 1972, plans 115 new stores nationwide this year.

The company says it isn’t leaving New Jersey behind, where 8,000 associates remain. The 2,000 Philadelphia jobs will come from a mix of relocation and growth.

700,000 Medicaid Enrollees Get Work Notices

Pennsylvania has begun mailing notices to more than 700,000 Medicaid recipients who must soon meet new federal work requirements to keep their health coverage.

Starting in January, adults ages 19-64 in the Medicaid expansion group must work or volunteer at least 80 hours a month, under rules Congress passed and President Trump signed last year. The formal notices list each affected household member.

The letters direct recipients to update contact information through the myCOMPASS PA app and check whether they qualify for an exemption. “Open your mail, download the COMPASS app, and make sure your address is current on file,” said Crystal Yates-Gale, a Philadelphia deputy managing director.

About 183,000 Philadelphians fall into the expansion group, and city health leaders estimate 73,000 to 90,000 could lose coverage next year.

Storms Knock Out Power Across Pennsylvania

Repeated rounds of thunderstorms knocked out power to tens of thousands of Pennsylvanians on Thursday, from the Lake Erie shore to the Philadelphia suburbs.

Nearly 30,000 FirstEnergy and Penelec customers lost power across western and central Pennsylvania, with Elk, Jefferson, and Cameron counties hit hardest. Thousands more went dark in the south-central region after hours of overnight storms and rain.

Flooding closed or restricted roads in Lycoming and Union counties, and storm damage in Erie canceled classes at some schools.

Forecasters say the pattern isn’t finished. Another round of storms, along with dangerous heat and humidity, is expected before drier air arrives for the holiday weekend.
