Gold Scam Posed as ICE

State police say a traffic stop on Interstate 80 in Union County unraveled a $1.2 million scam in which callers posing as ICE agents frightened victims into buying gold.

Troopers pulled over Gagandeep Singh, 24, and Ajaypreet Singh, 22, both of Elk Grove, California, in White Deer Township Thursday and found 34 gold bars and nine gold coins worth about $215,000 under the seats and stuffed in socks—along with a forged affidavit from an ICE agent named “Andrew Hall.”

The victim named in a fake ICE affidavit found in the car identified both men as the couriers who collected the gold he’d been threatened into buying. Both are in the Union County jail on $500,000 bail each.

Impersonating ICE agents has become a growth industry, with at least 31 cases nationwide in 2025, six times the prior decade’s yearly average. No real agent will ever tell you to buy gold and hand it to someone.

Measles Climbs to 676 Cases

Pennsylvania’s measles outbreak has grown to 676 cases across 37 counties, with 124 people hospitalized, the state Health Department reported Friday.

For the first time, four fully vaccinated people have caught the virus, in Lancaster, Centre, Jefferson, and Lycoming counties. None were hospitalized, and Health Secretary Debra Bogen said a few such cases are expected as spread widens.

Lancaster County remains the epicenter with 295 cases, about 44% of the state total. Chester County has climbed to 65 from 41 on Aug. 25 and is now designated an area of community transmission. Statewide cases have nearly tripled in a month; Pennsylvania recorded just 16 in all of 2025.

The two-dose MMR vaccine is 97% effective. Bogen called measles “one of the most contagious human viruses” and said up to 9 in 10 unvaccinated people exposed to a case will get sick.

Penn State Grinds past Temple

No. 16 Penn State shook off a sluggish first half to beat Temple 27-9 at Lincoln Financial Field Saturday, moving to 2-0 under Matt Campbell.

Rocco Becht opened with a 56-yard strike to Koby Howard, then went cold—Penn State managed seven yards on its next nine plays and Ryan Barker missed a 33-yard field goal. The Nittany Lions led 10-3 at halftime, then scored on five straight possessions. Becht finished 21 of 27 for 268 yards and three touchdowns, two to tight end Benjamin Brahmer.

Penn State scored on three straight second-half drives to pull away. Carson Hansen ran for 84 yards on 19 carries.

Temple’s Jaxon Smolik, a former Nittany Lion, ran for 71 yards against his old team, and the Owls (1-1) got a late touchdown from Ajani Sheppard.
