Nor’easter Soaks Region, Scraps Events

A slow-moving nor’easter is soaking the Philadelphia region with heavy rain and high winds through Sunday, with major coastal flooding expected along the New Jersey and Delaware coasts.

Thousands lost power along the East Coast as the storm arrived Friday night, and tens of millions of people are in its path. Gusts could reach 60 mph at the Shore.

The storm scrapped weekend plans across the region, including the South Street Fall Festival, the Bike MS City to Shore Ride, and the New Hope Arts & Crafts Festival. Several Oktoberfests moved indoors, while Sunday’s Puerto Rican Day Parade goes on rain or shine.

Inland, a wind advisory covers the Philadelphia region, and widespread power outages are expected.

Health Department Pulls Disease Rules

The state Health Department on Friday withdrew a 502-page proposal to overhaul its disease-control rules after it drew thousands of public comments, many of them critical.

Senate Republicans said the rules would let health officials enter homes and schools without a warrant and speak privately with students without a parent’s knowledge. Rep. Arvind Venkat, D-Allegheny County, a physician, said the rules needed updating after 25 years.

The department said Gov. Josh Shapiro didn’t personally propose the rules and called claims meant to scare Pennsylvanians “inaccurate and disingenuous.”

The department plans to resubmit revised rules. Sen. Scott Martin, R-Lancaster, who helped write the 2021 constitutional amendments limiting executive power, said he’ll keep “monitoring this situation closely.”

Stars, Trails Shine in the North

Cherry Springs State Park, one of the world’s premier places to see the Milky Way, has finished $5.2 million in improvements designed to protect its famously dark skies.

Crews relocated parking lot entrances and built up headlight-blocking mounds so car lights don’t spill onto the Potter County park’s astronomy field.

To the east, state officials formally celebrated the Pine Creek Rail Trail as Pennsylvania’s 2026 Trail of the Year, its 65 miles winding through the Pennsylvania Wilds in Lycoming and Tioga counties.

The trail, which runs from Jersey Shore to Wellsboro, draws more than 44,000 visitors a year and generates more than $5 million in local economic impact.
