Hearings Loom for Frat Cocaine Ring Case

Several of the 14 people charged in an alleged cocaine-trafficking ring run out of Penn State fraternities are due in a Centre County courtroom today for preliminary and bail hearings.

Prosecutors say the operation, centered on the Sigma Chi and Delta Upsilon houses, sold cocaine primarily to Penn State students, with pledges allegedly forced to cut and package the drugs as a hazing ritual.

Attorney General Dave Sunday has called alleged ringleader Agostino Abbatiello the largest cocaine dealer to Penn State students, citing more than $123,500 in drug proceeds.

Abbatiello, who is being held without bail, and co-leader Thomas Robinson allegedly made regular runs to New York and Philadelphia for large quantities of cocaine.

Protected Bald Eagle Shot Dead along Trail

The Pennsylvania Game Commission is searching for whoever shot a young bald eagle found dying along a western Pennsylvania trail.

A game warden was called to the Westmoreland Heritage Trail near Beaver Run Reservoir in Salem Township after a report of an injured eagle. The bird died before it could reach a wildlife rehabilitator.

A necropsy found an air rifle pellet lodged in the eagle’s wing, and based on the advanced infection, investigators believe it was shot more than a week before it was found.

Bald eagles carry heavy state and federal protections, and the commission is asking anyone with information to call its Operation Game Thief hotline.

3 Million Drivers to Pack Turnpike for Labor Day

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission expects about 2.9 million vehicles on its roadways over the five-day Labor Day travel period, from Thursday, Sept. 3, through Monday, Sept. 7.

That’s roughly a 1.2% increase over last year, with Friday projected as the single busiest day at about 725,000 vehicles.

To keep traffic moving, the commission is suspending all construction and maintenance projects from Thursday afternoon through late Monday night.

GEICO Safety Patrol teams and extra State Police patrols will be out on the busiest days, and drivers are urged to plan ahead and expect delays around peak times.
