Temple Cancels Record Gift amid Fraud Probe

Temple University has terminated a record $55 million gift from alumnus Christopher M. Barnett, the largest in school history, after a federal investigation into him surfaced.

Barnett, who resigned from Temple’s Board of Trustees, owns ABA Centers of America, which investigators allege fraudulently billed insurers for medically unnecessary autism therapy and manipulated records to maximize reimbursements.

Court records tied to the HHS probe allege Barnett used the proceeds to fund a lavish lifestyle, including luxury cars, a private jet, and a $20 million Fort Lauderdale estate.

Barnett, who is recovering from a life-threatening medical event, “strenuously denies” the allegations and hasn’t been charged. The 2025 gift would have named Temple’s College of Public Health after Barnett.

Man Charged over Threat Left at Shapiro’s Office

A Blair County man is facing charges after allegedly leaving a threatening voicemail on the main line of Gov. Josh Shapiro’s Harrisburg office last Thursday.

State Police say the caller identified himself as “reactivated army intelligence” and said his mission was to destroy the commonwealth and see state residents executed. Staff discovered the message and alerted the Political Violence Threat Unit.

Investigators identified the caller as Theodore David Knott III, 38, of Roaring Spring Township, and charged him with terroristic threats and harassment.

Knott was arrested Friday, released on bail, and is due for a preliminary hearing Sept. 21. The incident is the latest of several threats that prompted the state to create the dedicated threat unit.

PA Lawmaker Floats Renaming Lake Erie

A Pennsylvania lawmaker is preparing a resolution to urge Congress and the president to rename Lake Erie to “Lake Pennsylvania.”

State Rep. David Maloney, a Berks County Republican, argues that “Pennsylvania has only one Great Lake,” and that it’s time the state put its name on it.

He points to a Penn State Sea Grant survey finding that about 74% of the lake’s surveyed anglers are Pennsylvania residents, who travel an average of 103 miles to fish waters that pump some $40 million a year into the Erie economy.

The nonbinding resolution would need sign-off from Congress and the Interior secretary, and would likely face pushback from Ohio, New York, Michigan, or Canada, which all share the lake.
