Pennie Health Premiums To Jump 16% in 2027

Pennsylvanians who buy health insurance on Pennie, the state’s Affordable Care Act marketplace, will face an average premium increase of nearly 16% for 2027 coverage.

State regulators, who finalized the rates last Friday, blamed the loss of pandemic-era tax credits, federal health-care cuts, and rising medical usage.

Officials said they denied $94.7 million in increases they deemed unjustified, trimming the individual-market average from a requested 17% to about 16%.

It marks a second straight year of double-digit hikes, after individual premiums spiked about 21.5% for 2026. Open enrollment runs Nov. 1 through Jan. 15, and most shoppers will still qualify for some financial assistance to offset costs.

Clearfield County Extends ICE Contract

Clearfield County commissioners voted 2-1 to approve a six-month, $100,000 contract extension keeping the Moshannon Valley Processing Center running under ICE and the private GEO Group.

The facility near Philipsburg is the largest immigration detention center in the Northeast, and the county serves as a paid middleman between ICE and GEO Group.

The vote came at a contentious meeting where roughly 60 protesters urged rejection. Supporters said voting no would forfeit what limited oversight the county has and cut tax revenue to the local school district.

The center’s longer-term future is uncertain, as ICE explores buying detention facilities like Moshannon outright amid the Trump administration’s deportation push.

William Penn’s Spring Farm Heads to Auction

A historic Lycoming County property once owned by William Penn, the Quaker who founded Pennsylvania, is going up for auction next month.

Known as Spring Farm and located in Muncy Township, the land was sold off by Penn to settler William Ellis in 1771, and a home built there in 1783 still stands today.

Owners Gary and Linda Jones, whose family has held the roughly 34-acre farm for 10 generations, plan to sell it at auction on Oct. 10, with a pre-sale estimate of $600,000 to $800,000.

The Joneses say they can no longer maintain the farm and hope the next owner will treasure its past. The property is steeped in history, tied to both Quaker heritage and the Underground Railroad.
