Erie Grieves after Mass Shooting

Erie is grieving after nine people died Friday evening at a Perry Street home, all before police arrived, city officials said.

The eight victims included two young children and a woman who was eight months pregnant. The gunman, a 45-year-old man, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police Chief Rick Lorah said eight of the nine were family, and the ninth was a family friend. No motive has been given.

Gov. Josh Shapiro wrote that his “heart breaks for this family,” and Lorah said he wasn’t sure Erie had ever seen “the loss of life and the devastation” of Friday night.

Philadelphia Mourns Fallen Officer

Philadelphia is mourning Officer Shane Seiber, 40, a 10-year veteran who died after being shot early Saturday while answering a call in West Philadelphia.

Seiber, a father of two, had recently finished SWAT training and hoped to join the unit. His wife and family were by his side at the hospital, and Gov. Josh Shapiro ordered flags to half-staff in his honor.

His partner, a 33-year-old father of five, was also shot and is in stable condition. “This will be a period of mourning for us, but we will stand tall as a department and get through this together,” Commissioner Kevin Bethel said.

Eric Lewis, 35, is charged with homicide of a law enforcement officer and is accused of firing at nine other officers, District Attorney Larry Krasner said. He’ll be held without bail.

Penn State, Pitt Fall at Home

Penn State lost to No. 19 USC 31-23 yesterday, while No. 25 Pitt suffered its first loss of the season, falling 21-17 to North Carolina.

A record 114,419 fans filled Beaver Stadium for the White Out, but USC’s Jayden Maiava threw for 301 yards and three touchdowns as the Trojans pulled away after a 17-17 halftime tie. The Nittany Lions fell to 3-3 and 0-3 in the Big Ten.

Over in the ACC, Billy Edwards Jr.’s 75-yard touchdown pass to Shamar Easter in the fourth quarter dropped Pitt to 5-1 and gave Bill Belichick his first win over a ranked opponent as North Carolina’s coach.

Pitt also celebrated the 50th anniversary of its 1976 national championship, with members of the team in attendance.
