Skill Games Become Illegal Today

Skill games become illegal across Pennsylvania today, after the state Supreme Court ruled in June that the machines are slot machines under state gambling law.

Businesses that keep the machines now face criminal prosecution and immediate seizure of the devices, according to state police.

The court denied a last-minute request Friday to push back the deadline, and lawmakers never passed a bill to legalize and regulate the games.

About 70,000 machines were operating statewide before the ruling, and VFW posts and volunteer fire companies have warned that losing the revenue could force some to close.

Lawsuit Targets Lancaster Prison Mail

The Human Rights Defense Center sued Lancaster County Prison over its inmate mail policy, arguing it violates inmates’ constitutional rights by keeping them from receiving mailed materials.

The Florida-based nonprofit, founded in 1990, publishes Prison Legal News and Criminal Legal News, monthly magazines it mails to incarcerated subscribers nationwide.

The group has filed similar censorship lawsuits against jails and prison systems across the country, including in Michigan, Indiana, and North Carolina.

Its past lawsuits have typically sought court orders blocking the policies, along with damages and attorney fees.

Susquehanna Island Up for Sale

Wintermoot Island, a privately owned island in the Susquehanna River in Luzerne County, is now on the market for about $200,000.

The roughly 37-acre listing includes two ponds, full mineral rights to two coal veins, and an extra lot on Port Jenkins River Road for access.

The island can only be reached by boat. Its acreage varies with river levels, and historical records indicate Native Americans once lived there.

It shares its name with Fort Wintermoot, a Revolutionary War-era fort in present-day Exeter that surrendered and was burned in 1778.
