Nine Charged with Illegal Voting

Federal prosecutors announced yesterday that they’ve charged nine Pennsylvania residents with illegally voting in the state’s general elections despite not being U.S. citizens.

The defendants, ages 21 to 80, live across the state, from Philadelphia and Merion Station to Selinsgrove, Luzerne, and Effort, and are citizens of countries including Cuba, Kenya, Poland, and Russia.

Eight are lawful permanent residents, and most face up to a year in prison if convicted, while a Philadelphia man charged with two counts faces up to two years.

The Pennsylvania Department of State says non-citizen voting is extremely rare in the state, with no evidence of systemic voter fraud.

Heating Oil Tops $6 a Gallon

Pennsylvanians who heat their homes with oil are now paying an average of $6.01 a gallon, according to federal energy data.

That’s nearly double the roughly $3.24 a gallon Pennsylvanians paid at this time last year, according to U.S. Energy Information Administration figures.

The agency expects oil-heated households, most of them in the Northeast, to spend about 21% more this winter, citing tight markets for distillate fuels.

A 200-gallon delivery now tops $1,200, and advocates warn state heating grants of $200 to $1,000 will buy less oil, though one Nether Providence retiree who locked in $4.59 a gallon in August expects to come out ahead.

Toy Car Trek Leaves Philly

Two childhood best friends are driving kids’ electric toy cars from Philadelphia to Niagara Falls, hoping to land a Guinness World Record.

Cassie Aran and Lauren Lee, both 32, started the 750-mile trip at Independence Hall and expect it to take about two months, since the cars top out around 10 mph and cover just 7 to 20 miles a day.

It’s the pair’s second toy car road trip, after a nearly 600-mile drive from Jacksonville to Key West in 2024, and they’re posting video diaries along the way.

This time, Guinness waived a fundraising fee that derailed their first record bid, and some police officers who recognize them from social media pull them over just to ask what’s going on.
