Free Colon Screenings Starting at 45

Pennsylvanians with state-regulated health plans, including those bought on the Affordable Care Act marketplace, will get colon cancer screenings at no cost starting at 45 instead of 50 under a new law that takes effect in December and will cover most state-regulated plans by 2028.

The change replaces coverage rules based on 2008 cancer guidelines. The American Cancer Society lowered its recommended screening age to 45 in 2018.

About 6,900 Pennsylvanians are diagnosed with colorectal cancer each year, and about 2,600 die from it, according to the Pennsylvania Cancer Coalition.

The bill was championed by state Rep. Pat Gallagher, D, Philadelphia, who was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer at 45.

Halloween Night Turns Violent

Two people were killed and five others hurt, including three teenagers, in six shootings across Philadelphia between Halloween night and early Sunday, police said.

A 15-year-old boy was killed after a group of teens got into an argument with a 40-year-old man at a Port Richmond gas station, and the man was arrested shortly after, police said.

In Pittsburgh, a man was critically hurt in a stabbing on the South Side late Saturday, the second there in as many nights, and no arrests have been made.

The first followed a fight inside Capo’s bar on East Carson Street, and a city councilman and several South Side businesses are asking the district attorney to seek its court-ordered closure.

Toys”R”Us Returns to Pennsylvania

Toys”R”Us is coming to Tanger Outlets Lancaster in time for the holidays, the outlet center announced, though no opening date has been set.

It’s one of at least 21 Pennsylvania locations in a 120-store holiday comeback that will bring the chain to 160 standalone stores nationwide.

Some, including the new store at Lehigh Valley Mall in Whitehall, are seasonal holiday shops that will stay open into early 2027.

It’s a long road back for the chain, which filed for bankruptcy in 2017 and closed more than 700 stores the following year.
