Road Collapse Halts Jim Thorpe Trains

Part of Route 209 near Jim Thorpe collapsed onto the railroad tracks below yesterday, closing the road and canceling passenger train rides.

The highway is closed between the Liberties and Route 93 in Nesquehoning because of a hole in the road and a rock slide, with PennDOT and fire police on scene.

Freight traffic on the line has also been halted, Carbon County officials said, and there’s no word yet on how long the road or tracks will stay closed.

The timing stings for Jim Thorpe, where the train rides are the biggest draw of the town’s busy fall foliage season.

Penn State, Pitt Snap Losing Skids

Penn State snapped a four-game losing streak and earned its first Big Ten win under first-year coach Matt Campbell, beating Purdue 31-17 yesterday at Beaver Stadium.

Cam Wallace ran for 135 yards and a touchdown, and Carson Hansen added 96 yards and a score, as the Nittany Lions piled up 269 rushing yards and won their 12th straight over the Boilermakers.

After the game, offensive tackle Anthony Donkoh rang the victory bell and roared at fans in the student section, letting out four games’ worth of frustration.

Pitt ended its own three-game skid last night, beating Georgia Tech 34-11 at Acrisure Stadium to improve to 6-3 and become bowl-eligible.

Neshaminy Mall Closes after 58 Years

Bensalem’s Neshaminy Mall closed for good yesterday after 58 years, and the property is expected to become an open-air “town center.”

The Bucks County mall opened in 1968, sold two years ago for $27.5 million, and most of it could be demolished as soon as December.

Boscov’s, Barnes & Noble, and the AMC theater will stay open on the roughly 108-acre site off Route 1.

Bensalem is also rescuing the mall’s seven mechanical history dioramas, including one of Washington crossing the Delaware, to restore them and find them new homes.
