Pennsylvania Marks 25 Years since 9/11

Thousands gathered at the Flight 93 National Memorial Friday as Pennsylvania marked 25 years since 40 passengers and crew fought back over Somerset County.

Gov. Josh Shapiro and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum spoke, and David Beamer, 84, planned to read his son Todd’s name aloud for the first time. New display cases, funded by a $2.3 million gift, are showing passengers’ personal effects the public has never seen.

The day also honored those who answered the call. Flight 93 families recognized the Somerset County residents who served as first responders and caregivers for grieving relatives in 2001, and in Philadelphia, Mayor Cherelle Parker led a ceremony honoring the city’s fire and police departments.

The remembrance continues tonight at 7:30, when 40 candle lanterns will be carried to the Wall of Names at sundown.

Health Insurance Rates Set to Jump Again

Pennsylvania insurers want to raise individual health plan rates by 10% to 40% next year, and state regulators say they have limited power to stop them.

Small-group plans face proposed hikes of 4% to 34%. The Insurance Department will set final rates before open enrollment opens Nov. 1.

Nearly 202,000 Pennsylvanians have dropped Pennie marketplace plans in nine months since Congress let enhanced subsidies lapse. A coalition of unions and consumer groups wants the rates frozen, pointing to insurer profits and executive pay.

The department says it can reject filings only when insurers fail to justify them. Shapiro’s office blames federal decisions; Highmark and Independence Blue Cross cite rising care and drug costs.

Eagles, Steelers Kick Off Sunday

Pennsylvania’s two NFL teams open at home Sunday, with the Steelers hosting Atlanta at 1 p.m. and the Eagles hosting Washington at 4:25 p.m. on FOX.

Mike McCarthy makes his debut as Steelers coach, the first man not named Mike Tomlin to hold the job since 2006, with Aaron Rodgers under center for what he says is his final season. Atlanta will be without starter Tua Tagovailoa, ruled out Friday with an oblique injury; Cooper Rush starts instead. Pittsburgh is a 5-point favorite.

The Eagles begin life without A.J. Brown, traded to New England, with DeVonta Smith stepping into the top receiver role and Sean Mannion calling plays as the team’s fifth offensive coordinator in five years. Philadelphia is favored by 5.5.
