Penn State Sells Two Closing Campuses

Penn State trustees voted Friday to sell the Wilkes-Barre campus for $5.25 million and the Shenango campus for $1 million, the first sales since the university decided last year to close seven branch campuses.

HGC Development, a subsidiary of the Huntsville Golf Club, gets the 57-acre Wilkes-Barre campus in Lehman Township and plans to lease most of its academic space to Misericordia University, likely starting in 2028. Both campuses stay open through spring 2027.

JCL Development will make the 13-acre Shenango campus in Sharon a hub for education, workforce training, and economic development. Partners Jim Landino and Jen Krezeczowski said the campus “wasn’t originally on our radar.”

Both prices fell below appraised value, a trustee acknowledged, and three Shapiro cabinet secretaries abstained from the vote.

UPMC Ends Sex-Change Procedures for Minors

UPMC agreed Friday to stop providing puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and surgeries to minors and to pay $950,000, resolving a Justice Department investigation into potential violations of federal law.

Attorney General Todd Blanche said hospitals that “target” children with these procedures and fraudulently bill for them “will be held to account.” President Donald Trump signed an executive order in February 2025 restricting the procedures for anyone under 19.

UPMC, which had already halted the treatments, said the deal lets it avoid prolonged litigation and protect families from disclosure of sensitive health information. The department dropped its pursuit of individual patient records.

The department said there was no determination of liability, and UPMC denies violating federal law. Similar deals cover health systems in New York, Texas, Ohio, and Connecticut.

Perfect Records Pile Up

Two of Pennsylvania’s college football programs stayed spotless this week, joining Pitt at 3-0, as Penn State finished nonconference play with a 573-yard rout of Buffalo, 55-13, Saturday, in front of 106,254 fans at Beaver Stadium.

No. 7 Lehigh stayed unbeaten at 4-0 on the year, beating Dartmouth 24-20 as Luke Yoder ran for 150 yards and two touchdowns on 27 carries. Villanova beat Long Island 20-16, and Lafayette fell 40-34 at Columbia.

Not everyone stayed unbeaten. Temple blew a 14-point lead in the final 71 seconds and lost 49-48 in overtime at Toledo, its second straight loss to open the season.

Penn opened its 150th season with a 20-7 win at Bucknell under new coach Rick Santos, freshman quarterback Miles Teodecki accounting for all four Penn touchdowns.
