Weed Whacker Fends Off Kidnap Suspect

A man accused of trying to kidnap a 23-year-old Amish woman outside her Sadsbury Township home entered the U.S. illegally, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

Police say the man tapped the woman on the shoulder as she trimmed weeds near her driveway Oct. 14, holding a serrated knife and handcuffs and telling her she’d be OK if she cooperated.

She revved her weed whacker, screamed, and charged at him, sending him running behind a barn before she went to a neighbor’s house to call police.

He faces attempted kidnapping and other charges, and ICE has lodged a detainer to take him into federal custody if he’s released.

Gas Main Break Disrupts Olyphant

Hundreds of people in Olyphant are dealing with detours and gas service disruptions while UGI crews repair a broken gas main along South Valley Avenue.

The repairs have forced detours on South Valley Avenue, one of the borough’s main roads.

In a similar UGI main break near Bethlehem in 2013, about 255 homes lost service while crews worked through the night to restore it.

Anyone who smells gas is being instructed to leave the area right away and call 911 or UGI’s emergency line at 800-276-2722.

Eagles’ Carter Throws Shower for 30 Moms

Eagles defensive back Michael Carter II hosted a free community baby shower for 30 new and expectant mothers in South Philadelphia.

The moms received baby essentials and gifts, along with connections to maternal health resources and family support groups.

It’s not the first time, as his foundation gave gifts to 100 mothers in need during a previous holiday season, an idea that came as he and his wife, Alli, were expecting their first child.

Carter’s foundation has also hosted a community baby shower in Smyrna, Georgia, with Wellstar Health System.
