13 Hurt in Venango County UTV Rollover

Eleven children and two adults were hurt when a UTV rolled over on private property along Grandview Road in Venango County’s Cornplanter Township on Oct. 10, state police said in a report released this weekend.

Troopers said the kids, ages 6 to 12, and two women, ages 34 and 56, were all riding in the vehicle at the time of the crash.

One of the women was flown to UPMC Hamot, and several children were taken by ambulance to UPMC Northwest, though police haven’t released their conditions.

Pennsylvania is among five states that accounted for more than 30% of off-highway vehicle deaths nationwide from 2018 to 2020, according to federal safety officials.

State Launches Maternal Health Program

The Shapiro administration is launching a first-in-the-nation apprenticeship program in Lancaster County aimed at lowering Pennsylvania’s maternal mortality rate, Human Services Secretary Dr. Val Arkoosh announced.

Pennsylvania records about 82 pregnancy-associated deaths for every 100,000 live births, according to the state.

The state’s maternal health plan calls for paid apprenticeships to train more midwives, doulas, community health workers, and home visitors.

Lancaster County has been a testing ground for the effort, with a local initiative providing free doula care to more than 300 women since 2020.

Ex-Members Call for Church Probe

Former members of Philadelphia-based Faith Tabernacle Congregation are calling for the church to be shut down and investigated, describing it as a “cult” that left them with lasting emotional trauma.

The fundamentalist church, which has branches in Mechanicsburg and Lebanon, rejects modern medicine and teaches members to rely on prayer alone for healing.

More than 25 children of Faith Tabernacle families have died of preventable or treatable illnesses in Pennsylvania over the years, including five during a 1991 measles outbreak.

Church leaders have generally declined to speak with reporters, and some members have said they feel persecuted for their beliefs.
